Calving Right Along! Feb/March 016

Calving Right Along at the Nelson Ranch

Calving Season starts mid Feb and continues throughout March and April.  190 2-3 year old Heifers calve out this year along with 400 cows. The Heifers are in calving pens behind the main house and the Cow calving pen is nearby. Every 3-4 hours round the clock the cows are checked for any birthing issues and the new calves are tagged, vaccinated, and bull calves banded every day after they are born.

The Nelson Crew manages to calve out 500 + cow pairs.  In May branding and giving the second set of vaccines to the calves is done and they are turned out in pastures around the main ranch. In June turnout begins to the National forest.  Stay tuned for the next 2 Month's Picture Adventures!
